KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) — The ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS), Chile held a reception on Monday, in celebration of the 49th anniversary of the ASEAN establishment.
More than 200 guests including diplomats, businessmen and officials from the foreign ministry joined Malaysian Ambassador to Chile, Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya and Indonesian Ambassador, Philemon Arobaya as the duo performed the flag-raising ceremony.
The ceremony began with the cutting of the ASEAN cake prepared by the Perwakilan Ladies of Malaysia in Santiago (Malaysian Ladies Association of Santiago), ACS said in a statement Tuesday.
Also present were Thailand Ambassador to Chile, Saroj Thanasunti and Chile’s Foreign Minister, Heraldo Munoz.
Thailand currently holds the Chair of ACS, which also includes all the five ASEAN embassies in Santiago, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Philipines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Malaysia became the first chair when ACS was re-invigorated last year.
Munoz in his speech indicated the importance of Chile’s relations with ASEAN member states, especially after it was accepted to accede to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation of ASEAN last year.
