The Santiago Times is an independent English-language news outlet covering Latin America, with a special emphasis on Chile. Since 1991, our mission has been to make the region more accessible and understandable to a global audience by providing accurate, insightful, and balanced reporting on the most pressing issues shaping the region.
For over three decades, we have earned a reputation for in-depth journalism, with a focus on politics, human rights, the environment, and social issues. Our editorial approach is rooted in clarity and context — we aim to make complex developments understandable to both newcomers and regional experts alike.
Our newsroom brings together emerging journalists from Chile and around the world. Together, they contribute to a diverse and dynamic editorial voice that serves an equally diverse readership: from diplomats, academics, and international professionals to Latin Americans seeking alternative perspectives on their countries.
Former contributors to The Santiago Times have gone on to careers at some of the world’s leading media organizations, including The New York Times and Reuters, reflecting the strong foundation in journalistic rigor and editorial independence we continue to foster.
Originally launched under the domain santiagotimes.cl, we have since transitioned to santiagotimes.com to better serve our international readership and expand our digital reach.
Our Founder
Steve Anderson, Founding Publisher of The Santiago Times, is a journalist and former attorney originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Before founding the publication, Anderson served as a VISTA volunteer, teacher, and community advocate, and worked as an aide to U.S. Congressman Bill Alexander (Arkansas, 1st District).
His journey to Chile began unexpectedly in 1987. After working with the Catholic Church’s Vicaria of Solidarity during a pivotal period in Chilean history, he launched the Chile Information Project (CHIP) and later The Santiago Times in 1991 as a spin-off project to serve international readers seeking reliable news on Chile’s democratic transition and regional affairs.
