Santiago – Chilean National Television (TVN) will have a special coverage of the 31st Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with the emphasis on the southern country”s delegation composed of 42 athletes.
TVN will broadcast more than 200 hours of the summer event with the comments of 15 experts in different disciplines, along with major presenters of the television station.
Chile will attend the Olympic Games for the twenty-third time, with the marathon runner Erika Olivera (for the fifth time) as the flag bearer. Most of the delegation is already in Brazil.
Chilean gymnast Tomás González is the favorite to win medals in Rio de Janeiro, judging by his recent results in his discipline.
He was a finalist in London 2012, when he managed to gain fourth place twice.
Tennis players Nicolas Massu and Fernando González are the only gold medalists in Olympic history of Chile.
They were the big surprise in Athens 2004 in the doubles and even more so in the singles when Massu accomplished an spectacular win.
In total, Chilean gained 13 medals, two gold, seven silver and four bronze in London 2012, coming in 75th place in the medals’ table; the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom were the leaders.
Chile’s main athletes in Rio de Janeiro 2016 will be, in addition to Tomás González and Erika Olivera, the weightlifter María Fernanda Valdes, the shooter Francisca Crovetto, sprinter Isidora Jiménez and shot-putter Natalia Duco, in addition to the veteran swimmer Kristel Köbrich (800 freestyle) and Hans Podlipnik and Julio Peralta (tennis, doubles).
