SANTIAGO – Sebastián Piñera has announced a new law that cuts remunerations and salaries for parliamentarians, the President, ministers, mayors, governors and other government officials.

In a show of good faith, the Alta Dirección Pública Counsel was established to decide the amount of the cuts. It now has 30 days to do it. The Counsel was set up in order to avoid the obvious conflicts of interests in having parliamentarians decide their own economic fate.

“Reform is fair and necessary which will better our democracy,” the president tweeted on Monday.

The original idea to half (50%) the remunerations was discarded from the onset.
